In 2013, a chart of popular calibers that was released by the website showed 9×19mm Parabellum as having 21.4% of the entire cartridge market, followed by the. police departments exchanging their revolvers for some form of 9mm semiautomatic pistols by the late 20th century. This, coupled with the advent of the so-called "wonder nines", led to many U.S. 38 Special revolver cartridge, is shorter overall, and being an autoloader cartridge, it is stored in flat magazines, as opposed to cylindrical speedloaders. The 9×19mm cartridge is ballistically superior to the. 38 Special was preferred to other weapons, such as variants of the M1911, because it offered low recoil, was small and light enough to accommodate different shooters, and was inexpensive. 38 Special caliber revolvers with a six-shot capacity. Previously, most American police departments issued. In addition, the Beretta M9 (a military version of the Beretta Model 92) was adopted by the U.S. įrom the 1980s to the 1990s, a sharp increase occurred in the popularity of semi-automatic pistols in the U.S., a trend foreshadowed by the adoption of the Smith & Wesson Model 39 by the Illinois State Police in 1968. law enforcement agencies, primarily due to the availability of controllable compact pistols with large magazine capacities that use the cartridge. The 9×19mm Parabellum has become the most common caliber used by U.S. Popularity Īfter the end of World War I, the acceptance of the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge increased in popularity, with the vast amount of pistols and submachine guns being adopted by the majority of militaries and law enforcement personnel from around the world. The name Parabellum is derived from the Latin motto of Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM), Si vis pacem, para bellum ("If you want peace, prepare for war"). Another wartime variation was designated the 08 sE bullet and identified by its dark gray jacket, and was created by compressing iron powder at high temperature into a solid material ( Sintereisen-" sintered iron"). By 1944, the black jacket of the 08 mE bullet was dropped, and these bullets were produced with normal copper-colored jackets. This bullet, identified by a black bullet jacket, was designated as the 08 mE ( mit Eisenkern-"with an iron core"). To conserve lead during World War II in Germany, the lead core was replaced by an iron core encased with lead. The Imperial German Navy adopted the cartridge in 1904, and in 1908, the German Army adopted it as well. Army for testing at Springfield Arsenal in mid-1903. In 1902, Luger presented the new round to the British Small Arms Committee, as well as three prototype versions to the U.S. This was achieved by removing the bottleneck shape of the 7.65×21mm Parabellum case, resulting in a tapered rimless cartridge encasing a bullet that was 9 millimeters in diameter. Demand from Germany for a larger caliber in their military sidearm led Luger to develop the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge for the eventual P08 pistol. Luger's work on the Borchardt design evolved into the Luger pistol, which was first patented in 1898 and chambered in 7.65×21mm Parabellum. Shortening the length of the cartridge case used in the Borchardt pistol allowed Luger to improve the design of the toggle lock and to incorporate a smaller, angled grip. The cartridge was derived from an earlier round designed by Luger ( 7.65×21mm Parabellum), which itself was derived from a cartridge used in the Borchardt C-93 pistol ( 7.65×25mm Borchardt). The cartridge was developed by Austrian firearm designer Georg Luger in 1901. Ī 2007 US survey concluded that "about 60 percent of the firearms in use by police are 9mm " and credited 9×19mm Parabellum pistol sales with making semiautomatic pistols more popular than revolvers. Since the cartridge was designed for the Luger semi-automatic pistol, it has been given the designation of 9mm Luger by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI) and the Commission internationale permanente pour l'épreuve des armes à feu portatives (CIP). Originally designed by Austrian firearm designer Georg Luger in 1901, it is widely considered the most popular handgun and submachine gun cartridge due to its low cost and extensive availability. The 9×19mm Parabellum (also known as 9mm Parabellum or 9mm Luger or simply 9mm) is a rimless, tapered firearms cartridge. Ocean Waves explores how reflecting on the past can help with understanding current feelings. Taku is pulled along for the ride as Rikaku tries to return to the girl she was before moving to Kochi. All that Taku can blame Rikaku’s attitude on is the fact that she moved from Tokyo to Kochi, a small prefecture on one of Japan’s islands. While Rikaku is intelligent, athletic and beautiful, she becomes the main topic of gossip because of her arrogance. Ocean Waves follows the life of Taku Morisaki, a high school student whose life is turned upside down after Rikaku Muto, a girl from Tokyo, transfers to his school. What makes this film so different from other Studio Ghibli productions - but worth the watch - is its mature themes and content. Even without any of the three creators of the studio on the team, the film still managed to score an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it took until 2016 for the United States to finally premiere the Studio Ghibli film.Īlthough it took many years for the film to release overseas and in theaters, Ocean Waves received high praise. The film eventually made its way overseas and had a theatrical release in the UK in 2010. It wasn’t until six years after its release that the film was available on VHS. Unlike many of the studio’s films, Ocean Waves premiered on Nippon TV and never received an official Japanese theatrical release. Despite the intention to create a lower-budget animated film, the project went over budget, and took longer to produce than originally intended. The film was released in 1993 in Japan as a project by some of Studio Ghibli’s younger staff. Ocean Waves is based on Saeko Himuro’s novel I Can Hear the Sea. SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Ocean Waves' Release and Reception Moreover, previous results have shown a quarter-power allometric scaling relationship between cell size and body size in a range of cell types in mammals, including neurons 10. Past work on cardiovascular networks has employed WBE theory to derive scaling laws for the vessel radius and length as a result of minimizing power loss for fluid flow along with space filling in order to fuel whole organism metabolism 9. West, Brown, and Enquist (WBE) proposed that Kleiber’s law and other biological scaling laws arise because biological organisms are sustained by resource distribution branching networks that are optimized to supply all parts of the body 7. An example is metabolic rate scaling with body mass to the power 3/4, a result known as Kleiber’s Law 8. Generally, a biological property Y scales with body mass M as \(Y = Y_0 M^\), where \(Y_0\) is a proportionality constant and b is a scaling exponent 7. Here, we seek to address the question of how structural properties relate to neuron function and whether there are evolutionary driving forces that dictate how morphology is optimized by biological principles or pressures.Ī promising approach to the relationship between neuron structure and function is biological scaling theory, as it has previously been applied to understand patterns in the branching structures of biological resource distribution networks. A major future goal of neuron cell-type classification is to establish a correspondence between morphological and functional properties 2. Within sensory, motor, and interneurons, there are different types of neurotransmitters and receptors that affect the nature of signal processing 6. For example, recent work has established quantitative morphological distinctions across different cell types, focusing on quantities such as mean dendritic length, total dendritic length, and number of branching points 4, 5.Īs vast as the structural diversity is, there is an even greater diversity of functional properties 1. Modern techniques and devices have allowed for more precise quantitative measurements at the single-cell level. For instance, Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s “Histology of the Nervous System of Man and Vertebrates” is considered to be the founding document of neurobiology 2, consisting of detailed drawings and comparative descriptive analysis of neuron morphology across different cell types and species 3. Seminal studies in neuroscience characterized morphological differences across cell types. Different types of cells exhibit diverse morphological forms-some neurons have no axons or dendrites, while some have long axon processes that extend over meters, and others have vast dendritic trees that branch extensively to fill two- or three-dimensional space, corresponding to the mathematical and modeling concept known as space-filling 1. The processes form synaptic connections with one another in complex patterns. These dendrites generally conduct signals from the synapse to the cell body. Axons generally conduct signals from the cell body to the synapses, where they connect with the dendrites of other neurons. These processes transfer information between cells in the form of electrical and chemical signals. They are made up of a centralized cell body, called the soma, and two types of extending processes, axons and dendrites. Neurons are fundamental structural units of information processing and communication in animals. Our model also predicts a quarter-power scaling relationship between conduction time delay and body size. Notably, our findings reveal that the branching of axons and peripheral nervous system neurons is mainly determined by time minimization, while dendritic branching is determined by power minimization. We test our predictions for radius scale factors against those extracted from neuronal images, measured for species that range from insects to whales, including data from light and electron microscopy studies. Here, by constructing biophysical theory and testing against empirical measures of branching structure, we develop a general model that establishes a correspondence between neuron structure and function as mediated by principles such as time or power minimization for information processing as well as spatial constraints for forming connections. Classifying neurons according to differences in structure or function is a fundamental part of neuroscience. Neurons are connected by complex branching processes-axons and dendrites-that process information for organisms to respond to their environment. So when the movie came out and we saw the results, we knew we had made the right decision. "Although the development of AP actually started before the release of Casino Royale. "Yeah, Alpha Protocol has much of the edginess of the new James Bond movie," smiles Ryan Rucinski, one of Obsidian's senior producers, as we mull over his new roleplayer. From there, Obsidian are taking him and us on a journey they hope will meld the aura of the three JBs - Jason Bourne, Jack Bauer and James Bond. Michae Thorton (that's 'Thorton', not 'Thornton' like the high street chocolatiers or our production editor's home village) starts off in full-blown Mission: Impossible territory - gone rogue with only a list of names and potential safe houses, and several thousand air miles to help him. A spy who's a bit rubbish at first, but does have some as-yet unfilled skill slot that could lean on the violent side. The only man alive who has hint of a conspiracy that is soon to result in massive loss of life. Now though, with their own world to play with and a remarkably fresh take on the genre, they're on the offensive.īetrayed by his superiors. You see, Obsidian are developers of outstanding pedigree (formed from the ashes of Black Isle, the creators of RPG touchstones Fallout and Planescape: Torment) yet of late they've been somewhat saddled with being known as the developer who delivered the borked ending to KOTOR 2 and, with Neverwinter Nights 2, created a worthy game that went largely unnoticed. Not if Obsidian have anything to do with it anyway. In fact, the closest we've come to matching a Bourne or a Bond is Deus Ex, with only internationally hubbed adventures like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis treading on its coat-tails. Other stabs at the genre were late-'90s shooters with internationally themed levels ("Wow! A Chinese sewer!" "An underground base in Mexico? Awesome!"). Only one Bond game was ever any good (which wasn't even on PC) and the rest were a sequence of gaudy car crashes and poorly clipped death animations. So why has it never really translated to games? From Bond's First glowering stare across a baccarat table all the way to Tom Cruise whining like a petulant child and sticking explosive chewing gum on a fish tank - the international spy thriller has been a cornerstone of popular culture for decades. |
